TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My time in industry, experiences as a student, and my commitment to community inform my teaching practice. I strive to make learning a collaborative endeavor, and feel that I learn from my students as much as they hopefully learn from me. I aim to continue to grow as an educator, and refine my methods and include best practices I have discovered along the way as an instructor, from workshops I have attended, and in exploring innovative teaching pedagogies.

I have high standards to be met by the students in my classes. I believe my role is to both teach course content as well as disciplined work ethics in order to set my students up for success in their present and future careers. I am dedicated to being transparent with all grading methods and student progress, offering multiple means of guidance and support with all course material, projects, and exams. I emphasize self-motivation and collaborative research and analysis in the classroom. Therefore, experiential learning techniques are incorporated in my classes as tools to complement class lectures including video and web exploration, group projects, and student presentations.

I ultimately believe communication is key to development and find success in the classroom when students contribute as much as myself to our course discussions and learning. I also attempt to infuse a global perspective on aesthetic and cultural appreciation, and value diverse experiences and perspectives in the classroom.
